Individuals and families had a decent disposable income. Kids were given pocket money and were eager to spend it. The teenager as a demographic came of age (so to speak) in this decade and all the activities that centered around this age group became more prominent. A costume that highlights the 50’s is the car hop costume because the drive through diner or drive in was a focal point or social center for many a teenager or adult of this time.

Car hops were people that took orders, in the new fangled drive through restaurants that started cropping up in the 1940’s/50’s. They got the name because they would hop onto the running board of a car as it entered a diner lot. They would take the order, go to the kitchen, get the food and deliver it to the car’s occupants.  The drive through diner was considered to be a innovation in line with the times as more people drove cars. People would even socialize in a car, for instance, at a drive in movie theater. Car hops would be employed to take orders and serve food at these venues to.

Initially the car hop was just a ordinary guy or gal doing a job but as more drive through diners sprang up, competition became more fierce. The next evolution was to start employing pretty girls as car hops. Business was better when a smiling, pretty face was taking your order, so it was thought. The car hop soon had a special uniform. The car hop costume was essentially a costume out of the 50’s. But developed in line with the times until the idea of a drive through diner/ drive in movie theater as a going concern started to wane.

A typical girl car hop costume will consist of a dress with apron and even a hat. The outfit will have a retro look to it that harks back to the 1950 styling. There was a time when some car hops started using roller skates to ride around the lot to take orders. This might not be the best option for a party, but the standard costume should be just fine.
