50’s Hop With Poodle Skirt Adult Costume – Get Your Dancing Socks On !
The car hop costume is an outfit indicative and straight out of the 1950’s, so I figured it would be A-ok to feature a few other costumes that lived in that decade. The first to feature is the Poodle Skirt Adult Costume. This costume was the thing to wear for the teenage girl going to the sock hop. The 50’s are often described as an innocent decade, an affluent decade and a conservative decade (well, in the US of A anyhow). Going to sock hops, drive ins and diners was the way kids used to have fun…well the good kids anyway.

A sock hop was a dance for the kids, generally run in the local school gym by the teaching staff and parents. It let the kids have some fun but allowed their parents to keep some control of the event. The term sock hop comes from the participants having to take off their shoes so that they didn’t scratch or damage the floor. They danced in their socks, hence sock hop.
Many songs from yesteryear make mention to the sock hop, most notably the Don McLean song American Pie. The song “At The Hop” is all about the dances and the things that went on at a sock hop. It was a best selling record in the late 1950’s but went on to be covered by many bands after that time.
So this costume is a great nostalgia outfit. For people that were there at the time it will bring back a flood of memories. For people that weren’t, it will evoke that time and maybe make you think of famous movies and TV shows that portrayed this time. For me, the Back To The Future movie makes me think of the 50’s but there are plenty of others, including TV series Happy Days.
50’s Hop with Poodle Skirt costume consists of pink collared sweater, a flannel skirt with sequin trim and poodle appliqué, and a polka-dot scarf. Funnily enough, you will have to provide your own socks and shoes with this costume. If you want to be true to the time, get a pair of Saddle Shoes.
Other accessories that you may think about are some cats eye glasses or even a bee hive wig.
